AI search lets someone explain a situation, compare options and ask a follow-up without repeatedly reformulating short queries. That changes how a business can be discovered—but it does not mean every customer has abandoned Google or stopped visiting websites.
Separate adoption from assumptions
In its June 2026 update for website owners, updated on 31 August, Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly users for AI Overviews and more than one billion for AI Mode. These are Google’s global product figures. They are not a survey of your customers, a share of UK commercial searches or proof of a particular buyer’s behaviour.
The reasonable business response is to investigate, not panic. Ask prospects how they found you. Review the referral and search data you can access. Record AI-assisted discovery when a customer mentions it, while recognising that many journeys remain only partly attributable.
The question can contain the whole buying problem
A property company might ask for help comparing approaches to managing development enquiries. A sales leader might ask how to connect account information across systems. These questions contain context that a short keyword often leaves out.
Our interpretation is that this makes precise service explanations more useful. A page that only says “innovative solutions” gives little substance to compare. A page explaining the problem, intended user, deliverables, integration requirements and limitations gives both a buyer and a retrieval system more to work with.
Your website becomes evidence
A buyer may arrive after reading a summary elsewhere. The website still needs to validate what they think they know. Make the company identity clear, explain the offer in ordinary language and support important claims. If a case study has numbers, include the period and what those numbers measure.
Do not write every page as a list of disconnected answers for a machine. The person evaluating a significant engagement needs a coherent argument. Explain why an approach fits, where it does not and what a first step involves. Useful comparison criteria are more convincing than repeating the word AI.
What to change first
- Check that important service information appears in accessible HTML.
- Use one consistent business identity and canonical website.
- Link service pages to relevant industry examples and substantive guides.
- Make important claims specific enough to verify.
- Test the enquiry journey from an unfamiliar visitor’s perspective.
These actions also improve an ordinary search or referral visit. They are worth considering even before your analytics can isolate AI-originated demand.
Measure a wider journey without inventing certainty
Record useful leading signals alongside commercial outcomes: relevant impressions where reporting exists, qualified visits, enquiry quality and opportunities. An isolated screenshot of an AI answer is an observation at a moment in time. It is not a stable ranking position.
Set a review cadence and use consistent questions when checking answers. Note the platform, date and relevant settings. Treat changes as directional evidence, especially when responses vary. For the technical work underneath, read AI search visibility without the hacks.
