The foundations of
AI search visibility

A practical introduction to technical access, clear business information and useful content for AI search.

AI search visibility starts with a straightforward question: can a search system find reliable information that clearly explains your business and answers the customer’s question?

1. Make the useful pages accessible

Check that your important service and resource pages can be reached through normal links. Make sure their main content is readable without a visitor having to log in, perform a search or interact with a complicated interface.

Review crawler access and indexing rules. OpenAI distinguishes its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, from its training crawler, GPTBot. These are separate decisions, so review each provider’s documentation when setting access.

2. Explain the business clearly

Say what you do, who you help and how someone can take the next step. Keep business details consistent across your website and relevant profiles. Use specific service descriptions that would make sense to a customer encountering the business for the first time.

3. Answer questions with substance

Look at the questions customers ask when deciding whether to buy. Explain the relevant process, suitability, limitations and considerations. Add evidence you can stand behind, such as genuine work examples or clearly attributed sources. Keep time-sensitive information current.

4. Keep SEO fundamentals in place

Google says the SEO practices used for its regular search remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require a special AI file or dedicated AI schema. Prioritise helpful content, good internal links, a useful page experience and structured data that matches what visitors can see.

Visibility is an outcome to observe. Accessible pages and useful content improve the foundations. They do not guarantee indexing, citations, recommendations or a particular answer.

5. Measure with a realistic baseline

Record search impressions, clicks and enquiries where your tools support them. Look at identifiable AI referral visits, while recognising that a click report does not show every mention or every platform. If you check answers manually, record the date, question and context; individual answers can change.

Your starting checklist

  • Important pages are reachable through internal links.
  • Search crawler settings match the business’s intentions.
  • Services, audience and business details are easy to understand.
  • Content answers actual customer questions.
  • Claims are supported by accurate information.
  • Metadata and structured data match the page.
  • Search and enquiry measures have a starting baseline.
